Education Development Day in Tamil Nadu
Every year July 15 is celebrated as Education Development Day in Tamil Nadu commemorating the birth anniversary of K. Kamaraj. Educational institutions are encouraged to organize events and activities to mark the day, often including paying tribute to K. Kamaraj, conducting competitions and highlighting the importance of education.
K. Kamaraj made significant contributions to education in Tamil Nadu, often referred to as the “Father of Education” in the state. Here are some of his key educational reforms and initiatives:
Midday meal scheme
Kamaraj expanded the Midday Meal Scheme, which provided free meals to school children, especially targeting children from underprivileged backgrounds. This scheme helped address malnutrition and significantly increased school enrollment and attendance, particularly among children who would otherwise be working to support their families.
Free education
He introduced free and compulsory education up to the eleventh standard (equivalent to high school) to ensure that every child had access to education regardless of their economic background. This initiative aimed to eradicate illiteracy and promote educational opportunities for all.
New schools
Kamaraj opened numerous new schools, ensuring that students in rural areas had a primary school within a short walking distance (no more than three kilometers). He aimed to establish a primary school in every village and a high school in every panchayat. This expansion led to a substantial increase in the number of schools in the state, from around 16,037 in 1951 to 30,554 in 1966.
Free uniforms
To reduce disparities and foster a sense of equality among students, Kamaraj introduced free school uniforms. This measure aimed to eliminate visible signs of economic differences among students and prevent feelings of inferiority.
Teacher welfare
Kamaraj implemented the Triple Benefit Scheme for teachers, which included pension, provident fund, and insurance schemes. He also increased the retirement age of teachers from 55 to 58 in 1963.
Quality
Kamaraj’s government focused on improving the quality of education by increasing the number of school working days from 180 to 200 days. He also established the Madras State Education Advisory Committee in 1958 to suggest ways to improve education.
Overall Impact
Kamaraj’s educational reforms led to a dramatic increase in the literacy rate in Tamil Nadu, from 7% during the British period to 37% during his rule. His initiatives played a pivotal role in creating a more equitable and accessible education system in the state, benefiting generations of students, particularly from disadvantaged communities.
Let us celebrate Education Development Day every year and ensure quality education to every child.
